LARRY DILL
On 2/01/03 Larry Dill left the pastorate at Trinity United Methodist Church, Huntsville, to become Executive Director of the Institute for Clergy Excellence (ICE), a new ecumenical organization funded by a $2m grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc, to further the clergy peer group continuing education concept developed in North Alabama over 20 years. With generous funding from the Dixon Foundation of Birmingham, Larry was part of an initial team that brought the Methodist Educational Leave Society(MELS) into existence. MELS peer groups studied all over the world and proved to be transformational in really improving preaching. Lilly followed the progress of MELS through the years and has recently used some of MELS patterns in its current Sustaining Pastoral Excellence grant project. The purpose of ICE is to foster excellence through peer group learning experiences that provide collegial support, spiritual nurture, and ongoing renewal in ministry by focusing on preaching and worship leadership. ICE will equip clergy to proclaim the ancient message in a new day with theological and biblical integrity by learning from effective theorists and practitioners. These efforts will enhance clergy confidence and competence leading to congregations with a renewed passion for ministry.
